HCHW is headed by Dr. Mohammad Rafiuddin, who is a PhD in Social Work and has dedicated his entire life for social projects in and around Hyderabad. HCHW attempts at empowering individuals, families and communities by building their resilience to cope up with their financial situation and live a dignified life enjoying their rights and entitlements. HCHW works with neglected children and marginalized urban and rural populations. HCHW has evolved over time by implementing innovative social projects based upon the needs and priorities of the communities with whom we work with. All our social projects have been designed to sustain and improve the situation of people in crisis as well as to address the root causes of their crisis.

BACKGROUND OF DMR SCHOOL:

It is believed that engaging and imparting education to children is the best option to address the issues of protection, well-being and safeguarding their rights. We also at HCHW believe that education is the non-negotiable right of every child, including these underprivileged children. It is also one of the best mechanisms to ensure the protection of these underprivileged children when their parents are out at work during the day. Hence, a beginning was made by HCHW in July 2013 to setup DMR School in Ayodhya Nagar Colony, Hyderabad, to pick the underprivileged children from slum areas in and around Mehdipatnam and provide English medium education to them. We succeeded in enrolling 80 children from all religious background at DMR School by end of August 2013 by convincing their poor parents (mostly daily wage labourers). We not only provided them free education but also took care of their academic needs (books, bags, school dress, transport bus, shoes, stationary, etc.).

In the last six years, our enrolment grew to 353 children with the positive results coming out in the academics. That’s how DMR School became a platform for helping financially challenged underprivileged children, coming from below poverty line (primarily, underprivileged children from nearby slums), to seek free & quality education on par with those privileged children who can afford academic expenses to seek education in reputed schools.

Our current challenge is to sustain this model of help to these children. And hence, we have created this crowdfunding campaign on GoHive as a project to reach out to potential donors. Thanks to GoHive for running this campaign for free to help us help the needy children.

THE PROJECT INFORMATION:

As on date we have 353 students studying from Classes LKG to VII Standards covering the Telangana State Syllabus (English medium). They all have completed their final examination and promoted to next grade, scoring good marks in their academics. The challenge, however, remains on the sustenance of their education. The next academic year 2019-20 is to begin on 12th June 2019 and we must be ready with their academic package consisting of books, school bags, school dress, shoes, etc. to be provided to all these children when the school reopens. These underprivileged children look at this academic package as a welcome gift at the start of every academic year. It does go a long way in sustaining the interest of these children in their academics and a boost to their encouragement to graduate out and provide financial support/sustain their immediate families, in future.

On an average, the cost of each child’s academic package comes to US $ 35.74 (excluding the PayPal payment gateway charges). We earnestly appeal to the donors to step forward and crowdfund this project and help these underprivileged children continue their education. Your donations to this crowdfunding campaign will not only be the year-long gift to these underprivileged children and their immediate families, but will also go a long way in providing them continued education at DMR and sustenance to their families in future.

PROFILE OF THESE UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN AT DMR SCHOOL

  • All children studying in the school are from poor social-economic background, living in the slums situated in and around Mehdipatnam covering a radius of 10 to 15 Kms.
  • Majority of children are from families where both parents are daily wage workers with no guarantee of work for the whole of the year. Indeed this is the major factor affecting their overall living standards.
  • Almost half of the families fall way below poverty line while majority of them do not earn basic minimum wages to run their daily household.
  • A vast majority of (almost 98%) families are illiterates and these children are the first generation to attend a school. The children and their families are affected by extreme poverty and inconsistency/unpredictability in their family income.
  • They are living in extreme poor housing and sanitary conditions and lag far behind in terms of house hold possessions and social entitlements.
  • The life of children would be much more horrible if in case they are pushed for labour by their parents or if the children run away from home and start living on the streets.
  • The children are also exposed to the risk of human trafficking for the purpose of labour and other reasons.
  • It is very clear that they can neither afford for arranging transport facilities on their own nor they can think of dropping and picking up children from school as they are all daily wage labourers who usually start early in the morning for their work and return back late in the evening.
  • The competition in the labour market is so intense that the parents of these kids would miss the opportunity to earn for the day even if they are delayed by few minutes or seconds and will ultimately results in losing the wage for that day.
  • Thus, we are addressing the overall issues of child rights focused upon, education, health and protection issues.

English is the medium of education and we follow educational framework of Telangana State board.

Is there any charges involved from GoHive?

GoHive itself does not charge any platform fee, unlike other social crowdfunding platforms.  GoHive is a FREE crowdfunding platform, created to help the social causes. The donated money for this campaign gets transferred directly from the donor to HCHW account via PayPal payment gateway. The PayPal payment gateway will have a charge per transaction depending upon which country the donor is paying from.

If I pledge money without actual transaction through PayPal, how will HCHW convert that pledge into donation money?

As we compose this project, HCHW is working with PayPal India to create an account. The PayPal team takes typically about two weeks for non-profits account creation. Meantime, we are leveraging GoHive’s “Pledge” feature to take a donation pledge for now. Once the account is approved by PayPal, the GoHive team will reach out to the pledges for actual payment through PayPal.

Does HCHW have permission from Indian banks to receive foreign funds?

Yes, HCHW has permissions to receive donations in foreign currency from outside India, such as registration under FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act). You can click here for more details.

Can I get a receipt of my donation for submission to Income Tax?

Yes, HCHW will provide you a receipt which you can use for Income Tax filing in India. However, this is only restricted to donors from India. Please drop a note to [email protected] to get your donation receipt.

How have they been running DMR School all these years?

DMR School has been running all these years through donations from individuals and corporates. We has corporates, such as Tata, providing help through their CSR funds. We have also leveraged other NGOs to get funding for the school. But this year we do not have any funding from any other source. Hence we are leveraging GoHive to crowdfund the school.
